Bay Delta Conservation Plan Public Scoping Meetings For most of the past twenty years, more than half of the water in rivers flowing to San Francisco Bay has been diverted. Populations of Chinook salmon, delta smelt, longfin smelt, splittail, sturgeon, steelhead, and other fish dependent on the Delta ecosystem have fallen to record lows. Scientific evidence is mounting that inadequate freshwater flows and loss of young fish at huge Delta pumps are major contributors to the problem. The California Department of Water Resources is
holding public scoping meetings on a proposed "Bay Delta Conservation Plan."
Under some potential project purposes and alternatives, water projects could
divert even more water from the overtaxed Delta. Now is the time for all of us
concerned about the future of California's rivers, the Delta, and native fish to
make our voices heard: Let DWR know that you support environmentally and
economically sound project purposes and alternatives that reduce overall water
diversions and ensure higher flows to the Delta and Bay.
