Mary E. Silveira School
Restoration at Springs Hill
Teacher: Ms. Searway
The students at Mary Silveira joined STRAW at Springs Hill in March to remove a very large patch of invasive Himilayan Blackberry from one of the hill's 14 springs. The students worked very hard and pulled hundreds blackberry canes. We even discovered a spring well constructed from field stones that was not even known to the Marin County Open Space workers, it had been buried under so much blackberry! Great job, class!
We started
with an introduction and the handing out of gloves. The site was located
halfway up the side of Springs Hill.
. The students
made their way to the site.

The maddox is a
very valuable tool for this type of restoration work.

It felt
satisfying to get the really big roots out.

What a pile!
This old stone
structure at the spring source had been buried by blackberries for years.
Triumph!
