Brian Baird is the Director of the Coast and Ocean Program at The Bay Institute and Aquarium of the Bay.
Brian started the Coast and Ocean Program at The Bay Institute in December 2013 after working for nearly two years as a consultant supporting the Aquarium and The Bay Institute's lead role in the America’s Cup Healthy Ocean Project. The new program is intended to complete The Bay Institute's mission to protect, restore and inspire conservation of San Francisco Bay and its watershed, from the Sierra to the sea. Mr. Baird has created a robust Coast and Ocean Film and Lecture series that has featured some of the leading experts in ocean and coastal management in the world. He is the co-chair of the Golden Gate Marine Protected Area Collaborative, the lead for the Sacramento/San Francisco Bay Chapter of the Ocean Communications Alliance, and he serves as a primary liaison with the Port of San Francisco on the Port/Bay Conservation and Development Commission working group.
Mr. Baird previously served as the Assistant Secretary for Ocean and Coastal Policy under California Governors Brown, Schwarzenegger, Davis, and Wilson. He represented California on the West Coast Governors' Alliance, advised the California Ocean Protection Council, and served on both the California Coastal Commission and the Bay Conservation and Development Commission. He also created and was vice-chair of all four California and the World Ocean conferences. Nationally, Brian served as chair of the Coastal States Organization and served as a state government advisor to the National Ocean Council.
