Mary E. Silveria School, San Rafael

Mrs. Colombo and Mrs. Ryan's 2nd grade class

On March 1, 2007 second graders in Mrs. Colombo and Mrs. Ryan’s class at Mary E. Silveria School in San Rafael worked hard at pulling out blackberry roots on Spring Hill in Terra Linda to make room for willow trees.
Students and parents worked together to clear the area of invasive blackberry.

This project helped us understand the importance of restoring our natural environment.  We carried it over to the classroom with our watershed and salmon life cycle studies.  Students learned to do research on the computer, read books and articles and then create a project to present their findings to the class.
Thank you to the entire STRAW team for helping us with this very worthwhile project and for teaching us to be stewards of the earth.  This is the project that the students remember long after leaving second grade.
