Mrs. Colombo and Mrs. Ryan's Second Grade Class

We used our Teamwork life skill to pull out the long, strong vines.

Look at all the ivy we pulled!  Now the native plants will have more room to grow.

Second graders in Mrs. Colombo and Mrs. Ryan’s class at Mary E. Silveira School in San Rafael work hard at pulling invasive ivy from the banks of Miller Creek to improve the creek habitat in December 2004 with the help of STRAW.  The students studied our local watershed in preparation for their restoration project.

Sometimes the ivy vines were stronger than us!

The students spent the remainder of the school year studying the life cycle of the salmon in conjunction with their watershed studies.  The project based unit included science, math, language arts, public speaking and art.  Two California state standards, oral presentations and learning a life cycle, were incorporated into the project.

We listened and shared what

we learned during the circle wrap up with Laurette Rogers.
