PRBO Bird Program
Biologists and educators from PRBO (Point Reyes Bird Observatory) Conservation Science began the STRAW Bird Program in 2000 to provide classroom and field educational activities and studies focused on native birds.

In particular, they help students and teachers understand the importance of local riparian habitat for songbirds, especially declining populations of neotropical migrants.

Using area searches and point counts, PRBO has collected data at 15 ranches, including STRAW restoration sites, during the months of May and June in 2001, 2002, 2004, and 2005.

The following graph is a summary of preliminary, unpublished data collected on Marin and Southern Sonoma ranches by PRBO Conservation Science.

Total Bird Species Detected at Restored Sites

Total bird species detected increased significantly at ranch riparian (creek-side) restoration sites over time.

The collection of this data was made possible by support from Marin Community Foundation and participation of private landowners and the following partners: Marin Resource Conservation District, USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service, and The Bay Institute.
